The Battle of liege was the first engagement of World War 1 and was between the Germans and Belgians. The main objective was to take the city and the fortifications from the Belgians so that German troops could go around France through Belgium. The Germans believed that the attack would merely take a few days but it turned out to take many days until the surrender of the Garrison of the Forts and City. With the capture of the city slowed down it allowed the entente troops of the British, French, and Belgian nations time to advance into Belgium and take up defensive positions and saved France from an endangering move from the North.
